Located in the Nishijin district of Kyoto — a city whose cultural fabric is steadily eroding under the pressures of mass tourism — this project was conceived around two guiding principles: quiet beauty and deep experience. Rather than functioning as a mere point of sale, the space is intended as a place of withdrawal from urban noise, where visitors may turn inward, recover their sensibilities, and engage more profoundly with the experience of clothing itself.
The site lies just beyond Ichijo Modori-bashi, a bridge long regarded in local lore as the boundary between this world and the other — the living and the dead. How to internalize a sense of time and perception distinct from the everyday was a central question driving the design.
The façade strategy introduces a new outer wall that overlaps and envelops the existing entrance canopy, inserted as a new gate. This element both shields the interior environment and frames the threshold — an invitation to step quietly into another world. Upon entering, a straight sightline is terminated by an exterior wall erected in the rear garden, a device that literalises the boundary between the real and the beyond, oscillating between the two.
The existing building carries a long history as a Nishijin kumihimo (braided cord) factory, layering wooden trusses, earthen walls, and steel round columns into a complex texture. Respecting this context, the project adopted a rule of maximum reuse and exposure of existing elements. New interventions are limited to massive reinforced concrete and mortar, inserted with deliberate precision. Through operations of embedding, shifting, and cantilevering, new and old are entangled — structural paradoxes emerge as heavy volumes appear to float, deviating from the existing structural lines. This collision of logics produces an intentional friction within the overall harmony: not mere surface manipulation, but a spatial dissonance calibrated to generate perceptual glitches in the visitor’s experience.
A monolithic counter finished in vermillion lacquer serves as a key spatial and philosophical element. It is not a barrier between staff and guest, but a flat, equal ground for genuine dialogue — a physical embodiment of the practice’s commitment to care and conversation as acts of creation.
Fixtures and furniture follow a principle of reuse and reconstruction. Pieces from the previous store (TCF) and offcuts from the construction process have been repurposed and recombined, lending the space a unified materiality and a continuity of time — one that reaches back through the previous store, through the building’s own history, and ultimately to the Heian period. The bridge, Ichijo Modori-bashi, is said to be where the dead were once resurrected; fittingly, the furniture reborn here carries that same layered symbolism. The space is conceived as an attempt to create a stratified environment where past, present, and future coexist.
A corridor extending in a straight line toward the rear garden symbolises hope directed toward the future. A long table and chairs installed along this axis function as a permanent installation — evoking the concept of a dress code and inviting visitors to reconsider the act of choosing what to wear each day. The dress code, the project proposes, is not reserved for special occasions; it is embedded in the choices of the everyday. Every garment you choose reflects not only your exterior, but your interior. The space becomes a device for re-examining the meaning held within that choice. The garden is also designed to host events such as garden parties, functioning as a flexible outdoor venue.
The land was historically known as Jurakudai, an area rich in underground water. A shower space has been incorporated, drawing on this subterranean resource to present wellness — encompassing both the physical and the spiritual — as an embodied experience. The second floor accommodates a café function and a flexible space that can adapt to accommodate pop-up events, exhibitions, and installations.
Inside and out, the project plans to develop exhibitions in collaboration with photography, art, furniture, and music — all centred on fashion as a common thread. Ultimately, the project aspires to become a hub that reconnects clothing and culture, space and time — and to generate a new cycle of creative circulation from Kyoto outward.
